18-22 August 2008, Derry, Northern Ireland

Due to low submission/attendance, technical program has been shortened to  first 3 days 18-20 Aug

Evolutionary systems  emerged early  in the 1950s, following pioneering work by  George Box (1953), Nils Barricelli (1954),  Alex Fraser(1957), Hans Bremermann (1958), and Richard Friedberg  (1958) and have progressed into the current active field of evolutionary computing. In the 1960s, Lawrence J. Fogel developed Evolutionary Programming, Ingo Rechenberg and H.-P Schwefel developed Evolution Strategies during 1964-1965, John Holland developed Genetic Algorithms during 1960-1975, and John R Koza developed Genetic Programming in 1990s. Sadly, many of these early pioneers are no longer alive. Most recently, Lawrence J. Fogel passed away (February 2007). This Workshop/Summer School is inspired by those pioneers of the evolutionary computing community and their enormous contribution to the field, in a spirit of remembrance and tribute, and as a process of passing on their ideas to new generations of researchers.

The IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, the Intelligent Systems Research Centre, and the School of Computing and Intelligent Systems, University of Ulster have jointly initiated a Summer School with the aim of  providing, via excellent Lectures, seminars, and discussions,   state-of-the-art knowledge on Evolutionary Computing to participants. The objective of the Summer School is to provide a forum for discussion and dissemination of ideas on evolutionary computing, to inspire participants to further efforts and to contribute to advances in research. It seeks to engender participation in the adventure of research in the field of Evolutionary Computing and will provide up-to-date information, state-of-the-art knowledge on emerging areas and address important issues dealing with complex, multivariate and nonlinear systems, ranging from basic to applied research. The Workshop/Summer School will bring prominent experts of Evolutionary Computing together with the participants and the new generation researchers.

Keynote speakers

Call for Participation: We encourage graduate students (especially PhD), post doctoral researchers, scientists, practitioners, engineers, medical researchers, biologists, computer scientists, physicists and applied mathematicians to submit a 4-page (A4, IEEE format) paper on their recent research in all areas of evolutionary computing. The submitted papers will undergo a peer-reviewed selection process.

Accepted papers will be published in the workshop proceedings and IEEE XPlore.

This lecture series will be dedicated to the memories of the pioneers of Evolutionary Computing including but not limited to: Lawrence J. Fogel (1928 - 2007), Alex Fraser (1923 -2002), Michael Conrad (1941-2000), Hans Joachim Bremermann (1926 - 1996), Nils Barricelli (1912-1993).

Important dates:

Full Paper Submission June 15, 2008

Notification of Acceptance/Rejection June 30, 2008

Submission of Camera Ready Paper July 30, 2008

Registration of Paper/Participants July 31, 2008

Workshop 18-22 August, 2008

The Workshop/Summer School will be held at the Magee Campus of the University of Ulster, in the beautiful north-west of Ireland. The Campus has hosted many famous visitors.

Florence Nightingale visited on May 31st 1867 (Magee College at that time).

More recently well known politicians and leaders have been on campus, including: US President Bill Clinton on November 1996, HRH Princess Anne on April 2003, An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern on March 2004, EC President Romano Prodi on April 2004, US Senator Hilary Rodham Clinton on August 2004, UN General Secretary Kofi Annan on October 2004, US Senator John Kerry and Teresa Heinz Kerry on March 2006.
